Add a brain boosting side dish to dinner tonight!
Wasabi mashed Cauliflower is a brain boosting side dish and a super substitute for starch. If you pretend (just a little bit) that mouthful of mashed cauliflower is just like mashed potatoes. Only it’s better for your brain. Sulforaphane is a neuroactive component of cauliflower (and broccoli). In 2019, Chinese scientists reported that sulforaphane may promote new neuron growth, decrease brain inflammation and protect neurons against oxidation. This, in turn, may prevent the progression of AD, Parkinson's disease (PD), cerebral ischemia, Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and psychiatric disorders. Sulforaphane also appears to be a potent anti-toxin, protective against the effects of hydrogen peroxide, prion protein (prions are the cause of Mad Cow Disease), ammonia, and methamphetamine. In diabetic animals, sulforaphane may reverse impairment of learning and memory.
The taste (and the brain boosting power) of cauliflower reaches the next level after you mash in some wasabi. In 2018, Italian researchers explained that wasabi is rich in a neurologically active chemical 6-MSITC. They, and others, discovered that 6-MSITC decreases brain inflammation in experimental animals and may be useful in the fight against neurodegenerative disorders (such as AD and PD).
