Your Brain Runs on Talk
Your body runs on food. Your brain runs on talk. Every conversation is a little meal, whether you notice or not… some nourish you, some leave you jittery and worse off, and some are just empty calories, gone the second your brain swallows. So what kind of talker are you
?
DOSE talker
You know this one. It’s the conversation where someone actually listens, and you can feel it land. There’s a reason your dog loses her mind when you walk in the door, that’s oxytocin, and a good talk gives your brain the human version of it. As you speak your brain is peppered with dopamine (the payoff of being understood), serotonin (the calm of feeling valued), and, if you’re lucky, a shared laugh’s worth of endorphins, and you’ve got a meal that actually satisfies without leaving you bloated or looking for something else as soon as you leave the table.
DOSE = a conversation that fills your mind with Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, Endorphins.
CAT talker
This is the sleeve of cookies at 11pm—feels great for four minutes, awful for the rest of the night. The second a conversation turns hostile, cortisol floods in and knocks out the part of your brain that would normally help you see the other person’s side. Adrenaline shows up right after, and now you’re either yelling or shutting down completely, which is basically what redlining an F1 engine looks like right before something blows. Throw in a little testosterone during a competitive argument and the whole thing narrows down to one goal: winning. Which is a strange thing to want from an interlocutor and a bad thing to feed your brain.
CAT = a conversation that floods your brain with Cortisol, Adrenaline, Testosterone.
GAB talker
Most conversations aren’t bonding or fighting, they’re just logistics—directions, deadlines, “did you grab the milk.” Your brain handles this with a different, low-key mix, just enough alertness to track the facts and none of the emotional weight of the other two. It’s mindless muching. Reliable, does the job, forgotten by dinner. Nothing wrong with it. Too much of it will make your brain flabby though.
GAB = a conversation that stuffs your head with Glutamate, Acetylcholine, Baseline norepinephrine.
I’d recommend you fill your brain with nutritious conversation. How? Take a page from the rock’n’ roll handbook. Musicians call it “the pocket”—that moment a drummer and bassist lock in and the whole room feels it. A DOSE conversation is like that. It doesn’t happen by accident, and it definitely doesn’t happen over empty calories.
So… what kind of talker were you today? More importantly, what kind do you want to be tomorrow? Your brain is listening. Feed it well.

Wow, this really puts conversational dynamics into easily digestible categories. It's like you have studied brains for a long time.😜
