The uber prestigious medical journal, Lancet, empaneled a commission on dementia. Their 2024 update, regarding the medically proven ways to diminish the likelihood of developing dementia, is hot off the presses:
So, how do you reduce your risk of developing dementia?
First there are the usual suspects:
Don’t smoke
Keep a healthy body weight (body shamer shamers be damned)
Don’t imbibe too much (12 drinks per week limit)
Exercise regularly
Then there’s the stuff your doctor should keep on top of:
Keep your blood pressure under control
Keep your LDL cholesterol low
Keep your blood sugar under control
And a bunch of stuff you might not have guessed is linked to dementia:
Untreated hearing loss
Untreated vision loss
Depression
Loneliness
Air pollution
Prior head injury
Low level of education

What are the chances of seeing a cure for Dementia and Alzhmeirs in my life time? I'm 27.
I was surprised by the untreated vision and hearing being such a factor.
If a person doesn’t smoke, keeps their body weight down, exercises, and keeps the drinking down, then chances are they won’t have problems at the doctor’s office. Their blood pressure etc will be okay.
